Why did you decide to write humor?
I'm not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky, books, specifically to Lucky's own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I've found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good--or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her.
The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design?
When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works.

Let me say first that I am not this book's target audience. It was incorrectly put in the "Romantic Comedy" genre for Kindle books. Although it has a romance in it that sounds funny when it's described (headlining cross dresser is in love with the crime solving human relations boss at a major casino), it's really a murder mystery with a taste for the bizarre.With that being said, it held my interest. It read sort of like a Dick Tracy story (first person, short sentences with lots of description but not much touchy feely stuff) with over-the-top details, such as a swingers convention and porn star awards. You know most of what's going to happen as the story progresses because Lucky understands what happens and it's her narration, but you still are interested in the way those things will happen.
SPOILER ALERT:
I admit to being disappointed in the love stuff. I love Ted and his feelings are portrayed pretty wonderfully, and Lucky's realization of her own feelings is portrayed well, but with as overtly sexual as so much of the story is, it was surprising to find that the door is firmly shut on any sex scene between the two. For a book that openly discusses giant penises, brothels, and fellatio, it seems like there should have been a fairly steamy sex scene in there, but it stops pretty much immediately after Lucky is in her underwear.
Anyway, it was an interesting read but it's not for me. If this was a genre I liked, I might have given it four stars, but murder mystery, no matter how quirky, is not my thing.

I really enjoyed this book. It started out a little slow but picked up speed as the story went on. I liked the interaction of Lucky to the Big Boss. You could tell they really respected each other. Mona, Lucky's mom, was refreshing for a madam. She seems so innocent at times it's hard to believe she owns a whorehouse. I really enjoyed the mystery and the way it progressed through the book. Good timing. Have read two more in the series and waiting on books 4 and 5 at my library now. Even my 88 year-old mom is enjoying the series.
I don't take the time to write as many reviews as I should, but - after binge reading the first 5 books in this series - I felt that the author deserved me taking some time to join the rave reviews. I have seen people compare this series to the Stephanie Plum series (which I also love), but there is a huge difference Stephanie stumbles through adventures with improbable luck, while Lucky is an incredibly competent trouble-shooter for a major Las Vegas casino facing complex (and sometimes deadly) problems - juggling chainsaws while standing in a speeding sports care would be easier than her typical day. Interesting mysteries, engaging minor characters, "complicated" romances, and family dynamics that would give Freud a headache, combined with witty dialog, make this a must read series for anyone who enjoys a strong, intelligent female protagonist with a smart mouth and who won't take shit off of anyone. An intimate view of casino life and Las Vegas dynamics are added bonuses
I can explain why some people really like this book and others don't like it. It's not really a great book for either mystery seekers or romance seekers. Its a book for Vegas lovers. Being a lover of both Vegas over-the -top eccentricity and five star luxury, I couldn't get enough of this book. There are some people that are saying here that there is two much description, but that's the whole point of the book. If there are three middle aged women like me staying on the house in something called the Sodom and Gommorah Suite, I really want to know what the suite looks like. The women were comped with a free feast and free massages from gorgeous hunks while they waited to find out if they won $300,000 or $18 mil. (It depended on how many quarters they played on that spin.) I think the description was able to put me there, and I wouldn't even have noticed that she was writing a lot of description if reviewers hadn't pointed it out. Contrary to what some reviewers are saying about the writing, I think Coonts is a phenomenal writer.
I also do find it very funny, although most of the humor is dark. However, I laughed out loud when the "heroes" of the story were frantically trying to come up with the last bit of a large cash bribe (they were $20, short.)
The mystery of the woman who died in the heliocopter is secondary. The bottom line is if you love Vegas but haven't been there in a while, you will love this book. If you don't like Vegas, you won't like the book.

There are some promising starts to plot-lines. But it goes downhill from there - very fast. The story gets bogged down with unlikely and unnecessary detail, the characters fail to grip and engage, the plot becomes more turgid and unlikely with every page. The writing, after a few chapters, starts to sound like something written by a pre-pubescent kid (with wish-fulfilment in every line) I forced myself to keep reading in hopes that it would improve, but about two thirds of the way in I gave up.
